Overall I wanted to start by saying that every group did great. Group 1 talk about chapters four, eleven, twelve, thirteen, and fourteen. they also talk about Cerebral palsy and scoliosis for the disability awareness portion. In the chapters, I learned about the relationships in language when it comes to verbal messages. They discussed topic selection tips and how to evaluate sources also, went over how to organize your speech and how to improve your communication skills. That being ways to try and maintain your audience’s attention and how to make your speech simple enough so that everyone can understand. We also showed how to make the audience feel the speech is relevant to them. For the disabilities portion, my group went over what Cerebral Palsy and Scoliosis is, and how it affects someone. Also, I learn that children who suffer from cerebral palsy have a significant chance of developing scoliosis during their early years and adolescence and the Signs of scoliosis include: a difference in shoulder height, the head isn’t centered with the body, a difference in hip height or position, a difference in shoulder blade height or position, and a difference in the way the arms hang beside the body. When bending forward, the sides of the back may also appear different in height. We informed the class about the treatments that existed for both disabilities and showed great examples. We added videos and interviews for a better understanding.
Group 2 they talk about the disabilities hidden within and also chapters fifteen, sixteen, and seventeen. I love how they explain invisible disabilities with pictures, videos, and ted talks. they teach me a lot about diabetes that I did not know, For example, that if u maintain a healthy lifestyle you can live a normal life. They also put a ted talk about a young girl named Sarah, in which she explains how she lives her life with her disability.they had my attention the entire time it was super fun and they had awesome presentation skills. they also teach us about drug treatments that are available for people with these conditions. they were all fluent when speaking and the PowerPoint was design super simple but looking good so everyone would pay attention. The slides with the invisible, Cognitive, and phycological disabilities to be very informative. They went over the overalls for each hidden disability and gave fun facts and examples.
Finally, group 3 I learned the types of vision loss. which consist of Glaucoma is an eye disease that damages the optic nerve of the eye leading to loss of vision and even blindness; Muscular degeneration is an eye disorder related to aging, Diabetic retinopathy is vision loss due to diabetes. The group explained what it’s like living with vision loss and how visual impairment can affect people in their daily lives. After the facts, they went over the treatment that would help you cope with the disability. They also showed a TED talk that was very interesting and inspirational. Group three then explain on to the loss of hearing and went over how it happens, the types of hearing loss, the ways of communication. I personally liked the video that showed Valentina about how people misunderstood people that cannot hear and it opens your eyes, also to add to that, group three talked about head injuries and the programs that help people with brain injuries. they show us that we need to respect people with different disabilities and to not laugh and just try to understand.
